=============== TrueSync README =============== This document contains information about TrueSync Plus, TrueSync Desktop, and related products. After reading it, you may want to print it for future reference. Note: TrueSync Plus, TrueSync Desktop, and associated TrueSync accessors run only on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows NT 4.0 Workstations, and higher. Some online service accessors require Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 or greater or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or greater. As with any product, Starfish recommends backing up your data files before installation and periodically as you continue to use the product. For help backing up your data, please visit the Starfish Web site at: http://www.starfish.com/service/backup/ ======== CONTENTS ======== 1. Supported Applications, Devices, and Services 2. Starfish Products ================================================ 1. Supported Applications, Devices, and Services ================================================ TrueSync Plus supports the most popular personal information managers (PIMs), handheld devices, and online services. Starfish continually provides free software updates, such as synchronization for the most recent releases of PIMs. To check the Starfish Web site for software updates, click the Windows Start button. Choose Programs | TrueSync Plus | Product Updates or Programs | TrueSync Desktop | Product Updates. TrueSync's Component Install program will start. Check the Internet checkbox in the first screen and click Next. For additional product news, visit www.starfish.com. ============================================== 2. Installing and Synchronizing: General Notes ============================================== Please note the following guidelines: * To use TrueSync Plus, TrueSync Desktop, and associated accessors, you must be running Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 2000, or Windows NT 4.0 Workstations and above. In addition, Windows NT users must have administrative rights to install TrueSync Component Install. * Some online service accessors require Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.01 or greater or Netscape Navigator 3.0 or greater. * TrueSync products support only native operating systems for languages other than English. Support is not provided for "hybrid" Microsoft Windows environments, i.e., double-byte shell programs overlaying the English version of Windows operating systems. * If you are installing from a CD-ROM: Your CD may contain both a Documentation folder and an Acrobat folder. The Documentation folder contains electronic versions of the manuals in .pdf format. To read these manuals, you will need to install the free Acrobat Reader on your system. Follow these steps: 1. Open the Acrobat folder and double-click Acrobat.exe to install the Acrobat Reader. 2. Open the Documentation folder and double-click a .pdf file (for example, guide.pdf) to read it. Note: If you want to print the .pdf file, Adobe recommends printing to a PostScript printer. The graphics may lose their resolution and formatting if you print to a non-PostScript printer. NOTE: If you are using Windows 95A, you must install Acrobat Reader before you can view the pdf files. * After you complete the Setup Wizard, click the TrueSync icon in the TrueSync window to synchronize. For details on changing your settings, refer to the online help system. ======================================================== 3. Installing and Synchronizing: Accessor-Specific Notes ======================================================== * If you use Outlook 98, you must install the Outlook 98 Expression Services before you can import your Outlook files into TrueSync Desktop or synchronize with TrueSync. To do so, follow these steps: 1. In your Outlook 98 Setup directory, click Setup.exe. 2. The Outlook 98 Maintenance Wizard will start; click Add New Components. 3. Click Add from Web. 4. Choose Yes when asked whether to check your installations. 5. Select Expression Services. * Palm Desktop users: Before you synchronize, close Palm Desktop. Wait until the synchronization process has completed before restarting Palm Desktop. This precaution is recommended to avoid the potential for duplicate entries. * Only one version of Organizer can be installed if you plan to import data into TrueSync Desktop. You cannot import successfully into TrueSync Desktop or synchronize successfully if both Organizer 97 and Organizer 97 GS are installed. * Before you can synchronize with the StarTAC clipOn Organizer, the device must be connected properly and turned on. For details and illustrations of the connection setup, please read the StarTAC clipOn User's Guide. * Windows 2000 users: The initial release of Windows 2000 does not offer support for IrComm, which some phones and pagers utilize to communicate with your desktop or laptop computer. To enable communications using an IR port, contact the manufacturer of your desktop or laptop computer. If you use the Motorola Timeport device, please visit www.mytimeport.com for new driver availability and updates. * To use TrueSync SMS with a GSM phone, you should have an infrared port on your computer. However, if your system does not include a built-in IR port, it is recommended that you use the JetEye PC IrDa Serial Adapter by Extended Systems. * When you set up your GSM phone for communications using the IR port, the phone must be within 1/2 inch of your IR reader, aligned parallel to the reader. If the phone is not close enough, it will beep after a delay. A message "Re-Activate IR Port?" will appear. To correct this problem, move the phone closer and make sure it is correctly aligned. * If you experience synchronization problems, the IR speed may be set too high. To correct this problem, change the speed to 57.6 kbps or lower on the IR applet, which you can access from the system tray. * You may not be able to complete the Setup Wizard if TrueSync cannot communicate with your GSM phone. If this happens and you are using an IR reader, restart your computer, and run the Infrared Monitor applet in the Windows Control Panel. Activate the IR port on your phone and align the phone within range of the infrared lens on the infrared reader. After a few seconds, Windows will recognize the phone. If you are prompted for a driver file, insert the TrueSync CD-ROM and browse to locate the .inf file. After Windows installs the driver, restart TrueSync. * If you hold the Pause key (*) on your GSM phone for three seconds, a square () appears. If you then synchronize to Outlook, an umlaut character () will replace the square (). For example, if you are using Times New Roman in Windows, the phone number field in Outlook might resemble this: 95551222. When you synchronize this number to your GSM phone, the umlaut will be mapped to the Pause symbol (). * IR communication can function with only one application at a time. For example, you cannot synchronize successfully with the phone if the SMS application is running. You must exit the SMS application before starting the synchronization process and wait until the synchronization completes before starting it again. * Phone numbers can be stored in secure memory on your Ericsson wireless phone to prevent others from using them. Secure phone numbers stored on your Ericsson phone will not be synchronized when you select the "Synchronize" option, and may be overwritten if you select either of the "delete and overwrite" options. * Any references to the Motorola Timeport P7689 phone in TrueSync Plus or in the documentation also apply to the Motorola Timeport P7789 phone. =============== 4. Uninstalling =============== Use Windows' Add/Remove Programs feature to uninstall. Be sure to restart your system after uninstalling. In addition, please note the following if you use Outlook 97 or Outlook 98: * You must close Outlook before uninstalling TrueSync Plus. * Outlook 97 users: You may need to delete the EXTEND.DAT file from your Windows directory to remove TrueSync Plus from your toolbar. This will also reset your plug-in settings for mail filters and related items. ==================== 5.
